SplitMate › Trip expense calculator
Trip expense calculator
For trips where everyone puts money into a common pool and one friend holds it. Enter who put in what and what you spent. You get each person's fair share and who pays or gets back how much.
How the calculator works
It follows the cashier method explained in our guide, with the same rules as the SplitMate app:
- Fair share: expenses everyone shared are added up and split equally. Expenses only some people shared are split equally between just them. Leftover paise go one each to the first people in the list, so the shares always add up to the exact total.
- Put in: starting contributions, top-ups, and anything paid from a person's own pocket. When the cashier pays and the pool can't cover it all, only the extra the cashier added counts as the cashier's own money.
- Settle-up: everyone settles with the cashier. Put in more than your share and the cashier pays you back. Put in less and you pay the cashier.
Need unequal splits (exact amounts, shares or percentages), people who join or leave midway, or cancellation refunds? The SplitMate app handles those and keeps the numbers live through the trip.
Questions
How is each person's share calculated?
Expenses shared by everyone are added up and divided equally. Expenses shared by only some people are divided equally among just those people. If a total doesn't divide exactly, the leftover paise go one each to the first people in the list, so no money is created or lost.
What does "put in" include?
Each person's starting contribution, any top-ups, and anything they paid from their own pocket. For the cashier, only the part of a bill the pool couldn't cover counts as their own money.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
Keep it live during the trip
SplitMate does this as you spend: type "Dinner 1800 paid by Bilal" and the shares and settle-up plan update. Free on Android, no sign-up, works offline.
