How to split Goa trip expenses with friends
A Goa trip mixes costs everyone shares, like the villa and scooters, with costs only some people share, like drinks or parasailing. Here is how to keep that fair without a calculator session on the last night.
Before you leave
- Choose a cashier. One friend holds the common fund and pays for shared things. Read the cashier method if your group hasn't done this before.
- Collect the fund. Everyone sends the cashier an amount over UPI. Pick a figure that covers the stay and a couple of days of food and fuel. Top up later if needed.
- Agree on the "only some people" costs. Drinks, water sports and a night at a club are the usual ones. Decide up front that these are split only among the people who join in.
What gets split how
| Cost | Usually shared by | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Villa, homestay or hotel | Everyone | Pay from the fund on day one, so the fund's balance is honest from the start. |
| Scooter or car rental, fuel | Everyone | Fuel top-ups are small and frequent. Record them as you fill up. |
| Shack meals, cafés | Everyone | If someone pays with their own card, record it as paid by them. |
| Drinks | Only those who drank | Record drinks as a separate bill from the food. |
| Water sports, cruises, clubs | Only those who went | One expense per activity, shared by the people who took part. |
| Cabs and parking | Everyone in that ride | For a split group day, record the cab for just that group. |
A worked example
Five friends: Kavya (the cashier), Neel, Om, Pooja and Ravi. Each puts ₹4,000 into the fund, so it starts at ₹20,000.
| Expense | Paid by | Shared by | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Villa | Kavya, from the fund | Everyone | ₹9,000 |
| Scooters and fuel | Kavya, from the fund | Everyone | ₹3,000 |
| Shack dinner | Neel, own card | Everyone | ₹4,500 |
| Drinks | Om, own card | Neel, Om, Ravi | ₹2,400 |
| Water sports | Kavya, from the fund | Kavya, Pooja, Ravi | ₹3,600 |
The everyone costs add up to ₹16,500, or ₹3,300 each. Drinks add ₹800 for each of the three drinkers, and water sports add ₹1,200 for each of the three who went.
| Person | Put in | Fair share | Settle-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kavya (cashier) | ₹4,000 | ₹4,500 | Adds ₹500 of her own |
| Neel | ₹8,500 | ₹4,100 | Gets back ₹4,400 |
| Om | ₹6,400 | ₹4,100 | Gets back ₹2,300 |
| Pooja | ₹4,000 | ₹4,500 | Pays ₹500 |
| Ravi | ₹4,000 | ₹5,300 | Pays ₹1,300 |
Kavya still holds ₹4,400 of the fund. She collects ₹1,800 from Pooja and Ravi, pays ₹6,700 to Neel and Om, and adds ₹500 of her own, which is exactly what she owed towards her share. Neel's and Om's own-card payments count as money they put in.

Settling up over UPI
Settle on the last evening or on the way home, while everyone still remembers the trip. Each person makes at most one UPI payment, to or from the cashier. Record each payment as it happens, including part payments, so nobody gets asked twice.
Doing it in SplitMate
- Type "Drinks 2400 paid by Om" and pick who shared it.
- Own-card payments are credited automatically, and the fund balance updates as Kavya spends.
- The settle-up plan is ready the moment the last bill is in. The app reminds the cashier to settle up and can send a reminder message to anyone who hasn't paid.
- Share a trip summary on WhatsApp, in English, Hindi or Bengali.
Questions
Should non-drinkers pay for drinks on a Goa trip?
No. Record drinks as a separate expense shared only by the people who had them. Food and stay can still be split among everyone.
How do we split a villa when rooms are different sizes?
Most groups split the stay equally. If one couple takes the big room, agree on it before the trip and split the stay by shares or exact amounts instead of equally.
How do we settle up after the trip?
Everyone settles with the cashier over UPI or cash. People who put in more than their share get the difference back; people who put in less pay the cashier.
