SplitMate › SplitMate vs Splitwise
SplitMate vs Splitwise: which fits your group trip?
Both apps work out who owes what. They are built around different habits. Splitwise tracks debts between every pair of people. SplitMate is built for groups where everyone puts money into a common fund and one friend holds it.
The short version
| SplitMate | Splitwise | |
|---|---|---|
| Built around | A common fund held by one cashier | Balances between each pair of people |
| Who settles with whom | Everyone settles with the cashier, at most one payment each | Members settle with each other; it can simplify the debts |
| Account | None | Each member signs up |
| Works offline | Fully: adding, balances and settling up | Built around syncing online between accounts |
| Where the data lives | On the cashier's phone | In each member's Splitwise account, synced |
| Who can add expenses | Whoever holds the phone, usually the cashier | Every member, from their own phone |
| Platforms | Android 12 and later | Android, iPhone and web |
| Best for | Trips and outings with a collected fund | Ongoing groups such as flatmates, and groups where everyone pays as they go |
Where SplitMate fits better
Your group already collects a common fund
If everyone hands money to one friend before the trip, a pairwise debt app doesn't match how you actually handle money. SplitMate tracks the fund balance, counts the cashier's extra when the fund runs dry, and credits anyone who pays from their own pocket. See the cashier method for how that works.
You'll be somewhere with no signal
SplitMate doesn't need the internet for anything that touches money. See offline use.
You don't want accounts for a weekend trip
Nobody signs up. Friends get summaries and reminders as messages, in English, Hindi or Bengali.
You want every number explained
Every expense shows how it was funded and split. Mistakes are reversed with a reason instead of being silently edited, so the history stays honest.
Where Splitwise fits better
- Everyone in the group wants to add expenses from their own phone.
- Some of the group use iPhones and want the app themselves.
- You share costs over months, like a flat, rather than for one trip.
- You split with different people across many groups and want one running total per friend.
Can I use both?
Yes. Some groups use Splitwise for flat bills and SplitMate for trips with a fund. SplitMate doesn't import from Splitwise; start each trip fresh.
